Charcoal's Incredible Journey
Charcoal was a 9-month-old kitten found with significant injuries. He was rescued by HES's animal control and after evaluation by our vet staff, it was determined that he had sustained major nerve damage to one of his front legs, possibly from a coyote or animal attack.
The nerve damage caused him to walk on his wrist for quite some time, leaving him with a large and painful wound. The only way for this sweet kitty to have a chance at a normal and pain-free life was to amputate the affected limb. It was an extensive procedure, but thanks to our skillful vet team, it was a success, and Charcoal pulled through surgery like a champ!
With the useless leg out of the way and no longer in pain, this sweet, affectionate kitty was one step closer to his happily-ever-after on his Incredible Journey.
Charcoal spent weeks in a foster home while he recovered and gained his strength back. He quickly learned how to navigate life with three legs. Several weeks later, he was adopted into his forever family!
Charcoal's Incredible Journey from injured and alone to a loved indoor cat is a testament to HES's commitment to the animals in our care, and demonstrates all the faucets of the shelter that work together for our mission.

I took a while to get better after surgery, but my FOSTER PARENTS helped!
I arrived INJURED, but I never lost my spirit!

The DOCTOR fixed me up so I didn't hurt anymore.
Now I'm in my FOREVER HOME,
all thanks to HES!
