Animal Care Associate

The primary function of this position is to provide a clean, safe, humane and comfortable stay for animals in the shelter.


  • Cleans and disinfects assigned dog kennels and cat cages
  • Handles various cleaning solvents, chemicals, etc.
  • Receives, handles and kennels animals of different species appropriately, these animals may be aggressive, sick or injured
  • Visually inspects animals for overall health or behavior problems and reports issues immediately
  • Feeds and waters animals
  • Bathes and grooms animals when asked to do so
  • Periodically spot cleans assigned kennels/cat cages
  • Medicates animals according to procedures when instructed
  • Provides accurate information in a clear, friendly and concise manner to the public

Adoption Counselor


Under supervision of the Director of Operations, the Adoption Counselor is responsible for assisting customers with animal adoptions, performing adoption interviews, and creating and maintaining records pertaining to adopted animals. Some cross training for admissions may be required.


  • Interacts with customers interested in adopting animals or needing other services from the shelter in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Rapidly gathers and processes customer and animal information.
  • Conducts adoption interviews for prospective adopters according to adoption policies and procedures.
  • Handles and oversees incoming calls for animal adoptions and ensures messages are answered in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates and processes all paperwork and data entry for animal adoptions, including contracts, person info, animal info, and any other relevant information.
  • Processes all relevant fees and balances daily receipts.
  • Maintains files containing adoption information and records all adoptions processed at the shelter.
  • Handles domestic animals with appropriate care and caution.
  • Performs general outcome exam to ensure general health of animals as they leave the shelter or before they are taken to surgery.
  • Demonstrates sound decision-making based on policies, procedures, and principles of HES.
  • Coordinates with Animal Care staff to assist customers with adoptions, meet and greets, etc.
  • Coordinates with Medical staff to address any medical issues animals may upon adoption or as they present on the adoption floor.
  • Multitasks efficiently and effectively.
  • Ensures compliance with Animal Adoptions rules and standards.
  • Maintains supplies and inventory for the adoption area, including all relevant forms and adopter handouts.
  • Assists in creating records for adoptable animals for potential adopters to browse and ensures all information is displayed clearly on animal enclosures.
  • Maintains a tidy and sanitary adoption area and cleans on a daily basis, including floors, public spaces, and animal enclosures.
  • Maintains a pleasant, patient, and professional attitude toward coworkers and the public, even in high stress situations.
  • Supports the mission of the Humane Educational Society on and off the job.
  • Assists Director of Operations in other departmental functions and projects as needed, which may include admissions or behavior personnel activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Ability to gather necessary information and assess needs of general public for their animal situation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public and to a variety of audiences using a non-judgmental approach.
  • Knowledge of domestic animal handling, health, and care.
  • Ability to coordinate efficiently and quickly with multiple departments.
  • Ability to use Microsoft OS, Word, Excel, email and shelter data management software efficiently.
  • Ability to keep accurate and detailed records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to adhere to disease management and safety protocols.
  • Ability to work under stress during crisis or high pressure situations.
  • Ability to work varied hours/days, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.


  • Front office setting for clerical aspects of the position with a lobby area and computer desks. Will also be expected to move animals throughout the shelter, including main kennel areas and animal quarantine areas.
  • While performing the duties of this position, work is performed constantly in an animal shelter that operates seven days per week with exposure to animals, including some with questionable health and temperament concerns, moderate noise levels, zoonotic diseases, and cleaning agents.
  • Physical demands include but are not limited to lifting of up to 100 pounds, bending, walking, reaching, sitting, standing, grasping and kneeling, handling syringes, needles, and animal medications


  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required, college background preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of customer service
  • Minimum 1 year of animal care or shelter experience

Veterinary Assistant

The primary function of this position is to performs technical and routine animal care and related duties, carrying out daily assignments, following through on matters, and using independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions to deal with standard recurring situations.


  • Examines and vaccinates animals
  • Administers medicines, performs treatments, conducts health exams and administers first-aid when necessary
  • Handles animals and makes determinations regarding their disposition
  • Performs shelter duties including taking reports from the public, receiving animals brought to the shelter, preparing adoption paperwork, reclaiming animals to their owners, and transporting animals to veterinarians
  • Maintains proper inventory levels of cleaning and other supplies, and informs supervisor when reordering is necessary
  • Performs humane euthanasia


  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certificate or Associate's Degree
  • Valid driver's license
  • Certification in humane euthanasia
  • One year of animal-related experience

Volunteer Coordinator

The primary function of this position is to coordinate volunteer recruitment, activities and events while managing the volunteer database, trainings, and all volunteer activities at the shelter.


  • Assist the Volunteer Manager in the interviewing, recruitment and retention of volunteers for all facilities.
  • Assist with volunteer orientations for all new volunteers. 
  • Assist with Group/Corporate Volunteers at the shelter.
  • Give shelter tours to new volunteers and visitors.
  • Assist in the development and management of the Volunteer database Volgistics.
  • Maintain volunteer records including the Input of volunteer data and hours in Volgistics.
  • Aide in special event planning.
  • Assist with scheduling volunteers.
  • Assist in creating new ideas for volunteer development.
  • Assist in developing and coordinating ongoing educational trainings for volunteers.
  • Act as a liaison between volunteers and management.
  • Assist the Volunteer Manager in fielding questions, running reports, training and development of all HES volunteer programs.


  • One year experience working in volunteer relations and/or One year experience as a volunteer.
  • Two years of college preferred, Bilingual a plus.
  • Website design knowledge/experience.
  • Graphic design knowledge/experience.
  • Strong telephone communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
